Croatian footballer Nikola Porkivac dies in a traffic accident

He played for various teams, including Dinamo Zagreb, Monaco, Red Bull Salzburg and Rijeka, and participated in 15 matches for the Croatian national team.

Footballer  Nikola Pokrivac , a former member of the Croatian national team and former Dinamo player, has died unexpectedly at the age of 39 in a serious traffic accident, according to reports in his country’s media on Saturday.

According to police sources, Pokrivac and another person died on Friday night in a crash involving four vehicles near Karlovac, about 50 kilometers south of Zagreb, while three other people were injured.

Police have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the accident, according to the sports website Sportske Novosti.

After starting his football career at Varteks in 2004, Pokrivac played for various teams, including Dinamo Zagreb, Monaco, Red Bull Salzburg and Rijeka, and participated in 15 matches for the Croatian national team.

In 2015 he suffered a  serious illness  from which he nevertheless recovered to the point of being able to return to top-flight football. The team he was playing for at the time of his death was Vojnic, in the fourth division.

Dinamo reported receiving the news of his death with great sadness and disbelief.

“Nikola will forever remain part of the Dinamo family: as a talented midfielder, a fighter on the field, and a man with a big heart. He played 69 times for the Blues and participated in four championship titles and three Champions Cups,” Dinamo wrote on social media.
